School Project = Family Outing

For one of the classes I am in this semester, I have to attend two cultural events. Now, I know that we live in Los Angeles, one of the cultural melting pots of the country, but I have to say... it's REALLY hard to find cultural events that aren't on a Sunday. So, I decided that I would take my whole family down to Olvera Street. That's cultural, right?
Danior has to work that Saturday, so we drove down to L.A. and met him at work. We went in the office and met all the other work-a-holics who went in on a Saturday and Danior got to show off his adorable kids. Then he drove us (because I am way too chicken to attempt all the one way streets downtown) to Union Station -- which is only a couple blocks away from his office. We parked there and walked across the street to Olvera Street.
As part of my class assignment I have to write a reflective journal and put together a collage of pictures and memorabilia I collect while at these "events". These are some of the cute pictures... the other stuff was all for the collage and would be kind of boring to you guys, but here are 2 of the hi-lites:
I think these guys are Mexican Aztec dancers. They were fun to watch and both Rebekah and Jonah loved the drum and and dancing. They gave their intro in Spanish though so I didn't really understand any of it. I did catch that they wanted donations.... but that was only when they put out their money collecting baskets.

The second cool thing was that we went down there the weekend after Halloween and they still have the altars up from the Dia De Los Muertos celebration. I have seen pictures of the altars people build, but never seen one in person. It was amazing how much color there was. I always thought it was a morbid holiday, but I learned I was wrong... and I'll admit it too.

My darling daugher sitting on the super old historic stairs to a building that looked like it was falling apart. The colors of the building a beautiful though... and so is that sweet little girl!

Jonah had a great time too. He seemed to just be taking everything in. All in all we had a great trip and realized that we want to make it a point to have at least one family outing a month on a Saturday. It's been really hectic lately with me stressing over school and Danior having to work 6 days a week.

Oh and......

Who knew??
